Joe W. Newsom, Jr.

Joe W. Newsom, Jr. is an East Texas native. A 6th generation resident of Upshur County, Newsom graduated valedictorian of Ore City High School in 1998, a small 2-A high school located in the Eastern part of Upshur County. Upon graduating high school, Joe pursued his formal education at Baylor University in Waco, Texas where in May 2002, he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting, minor in English, graduating cum laude, as well as a Master of Accountancy degree from Baylor’s Hankamer School of Business. After completing undergraduate and graduate studies in accounting, Joe entered the Spring 2003 class of Baylor Law School, where he earned the Juris Doctor degree in April 2005. While at Baylor Law School, he was a member of the Order of the Barristers, which included the top contenders of the law school’s moot court competition. Successfully passing the Texas Bar exam in July 2005, Joe returned to East Texas to join the long-standing law practice of local Gilmer attorney Todd Tefteller, being licensed to practice law in November 2005.

Newsom is proud to have returned to the place he has always called home. Growing up in Upshur County, he feels that law practice in Gilmer has offered much more interaction with people, and has allowed him to more directly help people with real life problems. Newsom is also glad to see familiar faces, people, families, friends, whom he has known for many years. “It is an outstanding feeling to know that you have returned to a community that has given so much to you, that has helped define the person you have become, and to know that you can help people and be there for your neighbors to assist them with the legal issues that touch their lives every day.”

Mr. Newsom resides in Gilmer, Texas along with his beloved bloodhound Buford. In addition to his law practice, Newsom serves voluntarily on the Harris Chapel Cemetery board of directors, a small rural cemetery in Cass County, Texas where is great-grandparents and many other relatives are buried. He is also actively involved with Future Business Leaders of America, a national high school organization devoted to students interested in the business field. He serves as an elected business representative for the Texas F.B.L.A. board of directors and is also a Lifetime member of F.B.L.A.
